Certification course for nurses in gynecologic endoscopy

 

General objective:

To provide nursing practitioners the knowledge and skills to become an effective member of the gynecologic endoscopic team.

 

Specific objectives

1) Introduction to MIS

a) This course will provide the nurse with an overview of minimally invasive surgery, its principles and procedures, its instruments and techniques, the physics and physiology behind the practice

i) Principles of hysteroscopy – this lecture will introduce to the participant the hysteroscopy, its instruments and how the procedure is performed

ii) Principles of laparoscopy -this lecture will introduce to the participant the laparoscopy, its instruments and how the procedure is performed

2) MIS in gynecology:  indications and procedures

a) This course will provide the nurse with an enumeration of the common procedures in laparoscopy and hysteroscopy as well as the indications for these procedures and the outcomes  expected of these procedures

b) For laparoscopy - diagnostic laparoscopy, adnexal surgery (ovarian, tubal e.g. ectopic), laparoscopic hysterectomy, myomectomy, subspecialty procedures e.g. sacrocolpopexy, lymph node dissection, tubal microsurgery

c) For hysteroscopy – diagnostic hysteroscopy, hysteroscopicpolypectomy, hysteroscopic myomectomy, resection of uterine septum

3) Instrumentation in MIS:

a) Basic lap tower and hand instruments

i) At the end of this course, the nurse practitioner can competently operate the laparoscopic tower and trouble shoot problems involving the machines.  The nurse practitioner will also be able to identify the instruments, anticipate its appropriate use, and ensure their proper working condition.

b) Accessory devices in endoscopy

i) At the end of this course, the nurse practitioner will understand and support the surgeon in the following areas:fluid management, electrosurgery and other energy sources, smoke evacuator, morcellator, and other accessory devices utilized in minimally invasive surgery in gynecology

ii) At the end of this course, the nurse practitioner will be acquainted  with the set-up of the operating room, the console, and the special equipment required for the robotic surgery

4) Intraoperative role of scrub nurse in MIS procedure:

i) This course is a hands on course where not only the principles regarding patient transport and positioning, instrument and equipment handling,care of specimens but also the simulation of an operating room set up will be provided

ii) Step into the surgeons’s shoes simulation exercise where hand eye coordination simulation of endoscopic surgery will be introduced to the participant

5) Pre and post operative nursing care

a) This course will cover patient counselling and securing consents regarding the MIS procedure, handover of patients between preanesthetic suite, operating room suite, and post anesthesia care unit,  safety checklists during the procedure and handover
